Each year 7,000 seniors die as a result of a fall. This can happen because of changes in muscle and bone strength, hearing, and vision. Medications can also affect balance and coordination.
There are steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of falling. Remember, most falls can be prevented. Exercise regularly to help maintain balance. Pick up feet when walking. Eliminate rugs and clutter that may be tripping hazards. Use handrails.
Careless smoking caused one of every 4 senior fire deaths. Avoid smoking when drowsy. Attend to cooking. Use oven mitts when cooking. Falls can happen at any age, but falls resulting in severe injury and death are greatest among seniors.

Code requires a working smoke alarm on every level of your residence. If you are a renter, your landlord is responsible for making sure there are working smoke alarms. The best placement for smoke alarms is on the ceiling at least 4 inches from the wall. If the smoke alarm is placed on the wall, it should be between 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling. Smoke alarms should be placed in the hallway outside bedrooms as well as inside bedrooms and common living areas.
Cob webs or dust can cause false alarms. Vacuum the alarm off periodically. Test the detector at least once a month and replace batteries at least once a year. A chirping alarm means the battery is low and needs to be changed. Alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
A smoke alarm program is offered to residents. Alarms may be purchased at Station 1 during regular business hours. Battery operated alarms are installed as needed as part of the home safety survey program or door to door smoke alarm canvassing events. Donations are excepted and vary depending on the type of alarm; $4 for a battery operated alarm, or $10 for a lithium 10 year battery alarm.
If you need an alarm, stop by Station One, located at 1710 County Highway 10 in Spring Lake Park or Station Three, located at 11920 Ulysses St. in Blaine between 8:00 and 5:30 pm or call 763-786-4436.
